Today in EDCI 336 we had guest speaker Jesse Miller come in to talk about his field of work that is constantly changing. He is moving away from talking about internet safety and moving towards how to properly use the internet for educational purposes. His website is https://www.mediatedreality.com

Here are some of my notes from today’s lecture:

  • Kids may learn educational things on the internet but teachers often do not see the education and worth in teaching stuff from online or what kids have found online
  • Parents of students in your class may look you up and judge your fitness to be a teacher of their child.
  • Big brand companies can pay Snapchat to access all their data to see how many users are using their product in a given area at a specific time
  • Google tracks your patience level and tracks how long you watch ads or wait until you can skip them
  • Screentime in children increases anxiety for different reasons
    • Can be assessed by counselors or individual based questioning
  • Encourage parents to connect and engage in digital activities with their children to properly understand how it can be used and how their children are using it specifically
  • Students go on their phones because of lack of engagement in class.
    • You do not see kids on their phones during sports games
    • Some teachers may choose the approach of saying there is 20min of lecture then 3min of cellphones
      • Leads to less issues with kids on cell phones
      • Create rules where if they are caught on their phone during designated lecture time then the full class is punished and loses the 3 minutes
  • Your devices listen to you and then choose appropriate advertisements
  • Think about human nature and feelings of others when using technology
  • You should not share information on students on your personal account
  • Create barriers where you will not guarantee to reply to emails between certain hours to maintain your personal life
  • You could use fresh grade because it is Canadian and information will not be exported outside of the country
  • Mistakes catch up to educators quickly and the consequences are bigger than other jobs.
    • Same level to lawyers, police etc
  • On any network IT members can see everything that you have and are doing
    • Employers have access to what you do on their network
      • To prevent this do not connect to wifi use your personal data
      • Most workplaces provide tools to allow you to do most things for example computers, projectors, smartboards etc.
