I have created a lesson plan for grade 5 that uses social media in a transformative way. This lesson plan is a bonus assignment for the end of the year. Students will choose a subject area and find an educational TikTok or one that they have learned something new from and then they will share their learning by creating their own TikTok to post on the private classroom account. If you are interested in checking it out I will link it below.
Youtube video walking you through it and explaining why I created it.

Hey Hailey! First of all, wanted to say how much I enjoyed getting the student’s perspective of your lesson and then seeing your description and reasoning for your lesson! I truly think that your way of incorporating TikTok into the classroom as an exploratory inquiry project is one of the most effective strategies one could create. Something that really stuck with me is your statement of your reasoning for why to introduce social media to students; “teach them how to use TikTok for the right reasons.” I cannot say enough how important this statement is and thank you for explicitly saying it. You said in the lesson that many students at this age were using TikTok, but I was curious if you would consider incorporating an introduction to TikTok to teach the students how to use the app? Great lesson and your hair looks so fabulous!

Hi Hailey! I really enjoyed reading your lesson plan, it was very easy to follow and understand! I thought that the open nature of your activity where students get to choose their topic is a great way to offer more choice and voice in the classroom. I’m wondering if you would provide students with a list of hashtags, accounts or key words to help them find examples of educational tiktoks for their subject area?

Hi Hailey,
I really appreciated you listing so many good ideas for ways students can interact with TikTok in different subjects, I feel like I have a whole unit of ideas from your video. I also like that you have more than one adult supervising this lesson because if students are anything like me, falling down TikTok holes is what I spend half my time doing on that app. I suppose it is intentional by the app creators but a person can get really lost and forget the initial reason they opened the app. Do you think using tablets or laptops would be better for monitoring students for staying on task?
Thanks for sharing!
Carla

Hi Hailey! I really enjoyed reading your lesson plan! I like that it was clear and easy to follow. I also like how you made the activity open for students to focus on something they interested in while giving a small nudge to challenge themselves. I am wondering how you may adapt this for a primary classroom?

Hi Hailey,
I think it was a great idea to use Tik Tok as the social media platform for your lesson because of how popular it is with the younger generation. I know that students would find it really engaging, especially being given the opportunity to pick a Tik Tok that was educational for them. Would you consider having students comment on other students Tik Toks and share how they thought their classmates Tik Tok could be used in education?
